A Vacation...

Last week we had the opportunity to visit my family in Indiana. We were only able to stay for five days as Josh had to get back to the farm. It was a blessing to be able to get away and visit family and friends.

On Friday we went to the Indianapolis Zoo...

Saturday we all headed toward Chicago, IL to meet friends of my parents ~ the Paine family. We stayed for one night at their beautiful home. They were very hospitable!

Sunday morning Josh and I felt especially encouraged and challenged by listening to Dr. Paine and from the testimonies and blessings that were shared.

I am so thankful that my parents desired for us to meet this dear family.

We were very sad to leave my mom, dad and siblings on Tuesday afternoon to head back home. We feel so blessed and are very thankful for the many friendships that we have.

I was dreading out trip home and was expecting it to be long and boring. Well, it was long. (What should have taken 7 hrs. turned into 9 1/2 hrs.) I can't say that it was all that boring though. We had some exciting adventures along the way.

We left Indy in the middle of a severe storm ~ which didn't make for a nice start.

Somewhere near Columbus, OH we heard a loud bang. Josh realized right away that we had a flat tire. He pulled along the side of the road and had the spare on in 15 minutes.

He wasn't sure if the spare would get us all the way home, so we started searching for a place to get our tire replaced.

To make a long story short... we stopped at a few different repair shops and finally found one that would put a used tire on our van. And of all places! It was this little dumpy shack with two guys that looked like they just got out of jail. 45 minutes later we were on our way home again!

The Lord has been so good to us though. We are so thankful that we were able to take a family vacation.

We are thankful for Josh's family too, especially his sister, Liz for doing most of Josh's farm work while we were away. We couldn't have went without them. =)

July 4th Weekend

Picnics, fireworks, time spent with family and friends, reflecting on times past, the freedom of our nation and also the future - what God might have in store for us down the road. It's a wonderful time of celebration... it's Independence day.

A picnic at Josh's parents Thursday evening started our July 4th celebration. We enjoyed visiting with friends that we haven't seen in a while. My sister-in-law, Lydia made a fabulous meal for us including coffee cheesecake!

We had our annual little firework display for the children. They each take turns picking their own fireworks to light... it's a very special time for the children and fun for us parents to watch. =)

It had rained for a better part of the week... adding up to about three inches or so. God so graciously gave us perfect weather on Saturday, and so we enjoyed attending an outdoor wedding and reception.

What a nice time we had witnessing the marriage vows between Ashley and Jacob - two young people who love the Lord and are committed to serving Him. That is more and more a rarity these days. It was refreshing to say the least!

Ashley was a beautiful bride! (I have yet to see an ugly one) It didn't seem easy for Ashley's father to give her away - just like any father who just wants to hold on. I don't believe that the leaving and cleaving process was ever easy. Nonetheless, he did... and I'm sure he is trusting... knowing that God is the one who has joined them together and that this is his will. I believe it was him who said during the ceremony that he is not loosing a daughter, but gaining a son. =)

Anna and Becca enjoyed the cookies they served while the newly married couple were having pictures taken. They were good cookies too!

Saturday night Josh and I along with Anna, Becca, and our dear friend Hannah went to see fireworks. It was a really nice display... with lots of new things that I haven't ever seen. They set them off over the river... which made it even prettier seeing the reflection in the water. We had to park quite a ways away and ended up walking pretty far. It was very enjoyable though and the loss of sleep... worth every minute! =)

Strawberry Season...

Today it ended up being a much nicer day to pick strawberries. So far I made 17 pints and plan on making more tomorrow. Anna and Becca have been eating them like they're candy. I ate so many of them today - I think I'm good for about a week. ;)

Rainy Day Randomness

Well, today I am enjoying a lazy, rainy day pretty much doing absolutely nothing but thinking of things I wish I could be doing.

We actually started the day by going to pick strawberries... but when we got there we found out they were closed. (Because of the rain) So, we headed back home. One nice thing about it... we didn't end up getting wet!

Anyway, I thought this would be the perfect time to upload pictures. I thought these ones were kind of interesting... Becca "feeding her chicks"

Well, I was working on a nice long post... I finished typing and tried to upload the pictures. For some reason the pictures wouldn't upload for me. Even worse, it wasn't automatically saving my post. =/

I decided to restart the computer and by the time I uploaded the photos, I ran out of time to retype everything. (It would've been really nice if I could have copied and pasted, but that wouldn't work either.) Argh. Oh well, enjoy the pictures... I had great fun editing them!

Oh, and I must say, I'm extremely excited about my sister and sister-in-law coming for a visit in just a week and a half! It's going to be a super great week... Misha, our friend from Russia is also coming next week... so little time - so much to do!

It was never my intention to let it go this long... the summer months are much busier for us here on our farm. There is just so much to do! I suppose I wouldn't have to be this busy... I want our place to look nice and pretty... so, I guess I make lots of work for myself! Yesterday I mulched the flower beds and garden. I now have all of the garden and flowers planted and ready for weeds! ;)

Josh has been busy with repair work in the shop... this time of year there are plenty of jobs to work on as equipment and tractors are always breaking or in need of some kind of repair. He always amazes me at his ability to fix things! Right now he is working on a tractor for our neighbor... you could never tell it was a tractor - except for the seat and steering wheel. =)

Benjamin is starting to go. Everywhere. That boy is so mobile! He is another amazing person in our family. His new interest is helping me unload the dishwasher, whether they be clean, or dirty!

We really enjoyed our sunny, 80 degree weather today... especially the girls! We're starting the summer (man, it's not even summer yet) with a bang! They were so excited to get out the pool and swim. =D They spent almost the entire day outdoors, getting in and out of the pool - oh so much energy! My little swimmers...

Two Saturdays ago my sister Stefanie and sister-in-law Lydia drove from Indiana for a visit. It was soo good to spend time with them... I miss having Stef here already! We have WAY too much fun together! =D

While Stefanie was here for a visit we decided to help my aunt and cousins clean my grandparents house... like washing walls, curtains, blinds - stuff like that. It was good to get out and do something different, and I had lots of fun spending the day with them.

Friday evening after Stefanie and Lydia left I went to a scrap-booking get-together at our church. It was a really nice evening, I enjoyed talking with the ladies and actually got to know some of them a little better. It is something they do once a month... I can't wait to go again. I really like the scrapbook pages that I made too.

Each of the ladies bring a dessert or appetizer to share... this is what I made to bring along - it was a hit! - ~Coconut-Key Lime Squares~

Yesterday I took some pictures of Ben for practice. I'm taking my cousin's senior pictures this evening and wanted to make sure the spots I picked will work. =) I'll let you know how the real thing goes... if it turns out well that is! I'm sure Cody will be much better to photograph - Ben just wasn't in the mood... I'd set him down, step back a few feet and he'd be crawling towards me!

Crazy Saturday

A couple weeks ago I received an invitation to a "Towel Party". The invite was very nice... said date and time.... said there would be food and said to bring a wrapped towel. Didn't say where it was going to be held, who was giving the party, or a phone # to call... just said call for info. ;)

Well, I figured out the mystery last week or so and planned on attending. My week wasn't extremely busy really... Saturday got here though and I had so much on my mind. The girls wanted my full attention outside, showing me this, that, and everything! I wanted to mow the lawn... never did fit that in. Mostly because one of the girls left the lights turned on and ran the battery dead... oops! Anyway, my mother-in-law called me up around 12pm asking if I was going to the party. (which happened to be at 2pm) I had completely forgot! I had two hours to get lunch ready, eat, take a shower, get ready, change two diapers, get three little ones dressed, wrap my gift, pack my diaper bag, drop Becca off at Grandma's and arrive at the party on time, and 20 other things in between. Whew!... guess what? I not only arrived on time... I was early!

I'm so glad that I decided to go though - I had a really nice time... it was all worth the rush. =) Here are some pictures of things from the party...

Healthy Recipe

Banana Topsy-Turvy Cake

Topping:
3 Tbsp. butter
¼ cup honey
½ cup walnuts, chopped
8oz. can unsweetened pineapple slices, drained

Melt butter in a 9” square baking dish; pour honey over butter and arrange pineapple slices and walnuts on top.

Cake:
½ cup butter
1 cup honey
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 ¼ cup whole wheat flour
¾ cup buttermilk
1 tsp. soda
½ tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. salt
1 cup rolled oats
½ cup bananas, mashed

Beat together butter and honey until light and fluffy. Blend in eggs and vanilla. Add combined flour, soda, baking powder, and salt to the batter mixture alternately with buttermilk. Mix well after each addition. Stir in oats and bananas. Pour over topping. Bake in preheated over at 350 for 45-50 minutes. Loosen sides of cake; immediately invert on serving plate. Serve warm or cold with whipped cream.

** I’m sure your cake will turn out just fine if you follow it exact, however, I did make some substitutions. I hardly ever follow a recipe exact. I don’t know why… I guess it’s mostly because I don’t have all of the ingredients it calls for.

Left out the walnuts, didn’t have any
Used a 20 oz can of crushed pineapple instead of the 8 oz of sliced
Put ¾ cup of honey in the cake batter (I’m stingy with my honey!)
I didn’t have buttermilk… used regular milk instead
For the rolled oats – I used quick oats
1 cup of mashed bananas rather than ½ cup

This cooler, rainy weather makes me really appreciate the warm sunny days we had last week and makes me look forward to the end of the week! So far it is suppose to be really nice! Today I was thinking about all of the trials, discomforts, and not so nice things in my life lately and then I stopped and thought… you know though - these same things bring me much blessing, joy and comfort! I thought I would share some examples:

Rainy weather - time to catch up on neglected housework,
boring drive (and almost falling asleep) to the auction to sell pigs – good excuse to stop and get ice cream =),
having my day interrupted yesterday to serve others – made me stop and think what I’m really here on this earth for and that I want to use my time to honor and glorify the Lord by helping others.

I was also reminded of this by a song I heard yesterday while working out in the greenhouse.

Work, for the night is coming, Work through the morning hours;
Work for the dew is sparkling, Work ‘mid springing flowers.
Work when the day grows brighter, Work in the glowing sun;
Work, for the night is coming, when man’s work is done.

Work, for the night is coming, Work through the sunny noon;

Family Night Out...

We enjoyed some family time last evening. We knew that we wanted to get something to eat and then go to the park. We thought it wise to get something to eat first or Josh and I might have made it a short playtime at the park. =D We let Anna decide where to eat... she really wanted ice cream so we went to City Limits. It was very busy... which I kind of thought it would- being such a nice evening. =)

Two hot dogs and four ice cream cones later... we headed off to the park. It was about 7:30 when we got there and I guess everyone was heading home 'cause there weren't too many people there- which was just fine with me. I like letting them run around on their own and not have to worry about where they are the whole time. Oh, and their favorite is still the handicapped swing. =)

I almost forgot to take pictures (I meant to take some when we got ice cream) but remembered just as we were thinking about heading out. My new favorite thing is taking pictures of our whole family- can get tricky without a tripod though. You just have to get real creative... picnic table, park bench, sticks.... yeah, about anything will work. I think that's what I'm going to ask for Christmas... you wouldn't believe how many times I've wished I had one - tripod that is, not a stick. =D

An update...

Here's my little man looking his Sunday best - runny nose and all!

I painted our downstairs bathroom the other day. Josh said I could go ahead and do that since we won't be remodeling for at least a few years. I'm not extremely fond of the color... I wanted something bright and cheery but not too bright, not too girly, and not too weird. =) I decided this color is pretty classic. (Almost the same color as Ben's room) I forgot to take "before" pictures, but I figured the only people that care already know what it looked like...ugly, old, and outdated! This picture is really dark and I didn't take the time to lighten it. But you can see the new curtain I bought that adds a really nice touch to the room.
While I was happily painting away Benjamin decided he would like to help. I thought I had the paint tray out of his reach... man his arms are long! He reached right up there and grabbed it! I wasn't very pleased at first as I was in a hurry to finish the job before supper - I'm glad that Josh took some pictures... it seems quite comical to me now. =)Yesterday was beautiful outside! The girls want to go out as soon as we finish breakfast and are coming and going until supper. With dinner and a nap somewhere in between. =)

We had a really nice day yesterday. We visited a new church, spent time with family, ate a really good dinner =), and watched Fireproof for the 3rd time. (still almost makes me cry - I love that movie!)

I actually remembered to take some pictures before church... I wanted to take more at Josh's parent's but... forgot. =(

Something I thought was very neat!...

Why Did Jesus Fold the Napkin?

Why did Jesus fold the linen burial cloth after His resurrection?

The Gospel of John (20:7) tells us that the napkin, which was placed over the face of Jesus, was not just thrown aside like the grave clothes.

The Bible takes an entire verse to tell us that the napkin was neatly folded, and was placed at the head of that stony coffin.

Early Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance.

She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, 'They have taken the Lord's body out of the tomb, and I don't know where they have put him!'

Peter and the other disciple ran to the tomb to see. The other disciple outran Peter and got there first. He stooped and looked in and saw the linen cloth lying there, but he didn't go in.

Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, while the cloth that had covered Jesus' head was folded up and lying to the side.

Was that important? Absolutely!

Is it really significant? Yes!

In order to understand the significance of the folded napkin, you have to understand a little bit about Hebrew tradition of that day.. The folded napkin had to do with the Master and Servant, and every Jewish boy knew this tradition.

When the servant set the dinner table for the master, he made sure that it was exactly the way the master wanted it.

The table was furnished perfectly, and then the servant would wait, just out of sight, until the master had finished eating, and the servant would not dare touch that table, until the master was finished.

Now if the master were done eating, he would rise from the table, wipe his fingers, his mouth, and clean his beard, and would wad up that napkin and toss it onto the table.

The servant would then know to clear the table. For in those days, the wadded napkin meant, 'I'm done'.

But if the master got up from the table, and folded his napkin, and laid it beside his plate, the servant would not dare touch the table, because.......... The folded napkin meant, 'I'm coming back!' He is Coming Back!!

Remembering Jesus as He died on the cross for our sins and rose again on the third day! He is now at the right hand of God making intercession for all who believe and accept the wonderful gift of salvation!

Visit to Indianapolis...

Ben and I visited my family for 5 days! We had a fantastic time and can't wait to see them all again! They sure spoiled us while we were there! I ate lots of yummy food, saw new places, went shopping, and best of all - spent time visiting some of my favorite people! If only Josh and the girls could have come along it would have been perfect!

Friday evening after supper my mom and dad took me downtown to the Chocolate Cafe for dessert. We ate some of the best cheesecake I've ever had! And their hot chocolate was delicious! The bottom of the monument above

I went to an auction with Josh today. It was at a garage that was going out of business. Mostly just had mechanic tools and other stuff like that – yeah, stuff is exactly what I thought of it. It was pretty boring, but I’m soo glad that my husband can do this sort of work… he’s actually very good at what he does! I was happy to do something that was just the two of us (and Ben of course) for a change. He found a hoist, (I think that’s what it’s called) a parts washer, and a bunch of other stuff that I can’t remember. =)

I took these pictures the other day… the first signs of spring! I can’t wait for the daffodils and tulips to bloom. =D And then it will be time to start the garden and plant flowers – I love this time of year!

Eating cereal for dinner (or, what normal people would call lunch) Cooking isn't exactly my favorite thing, so when Josh isn't here for dinner we have food that doesn't require lots of time. I know, if I always ate like this I'd probably weigh somewhere around 300 lbs.! Actually this time though... it was her choice and not mine. I had pbj with a large glass of milk! =D

I made these dresses in less than two days! I was pretty much sewing non-stop... mostly because I was having sooo much fun! I just love this pattern- it's really easy to put together and it looks nice too. =) The pictures were taken the evening of the first day... before I hemmed them and made the button holes.

Looking extremely bald in these pictures. Probably because he is. =D I just found out that my sis-in-law is expecting her 2nd baby! She's due in Nov. I'm excited for them and Lena too! I know what it's like to have siblings close in age... wouldn't trade it for anything!

Dresses and Workouts!

I've been working on sewing dresses for Anna and Becca the last couple of days. My sewing skills aren't the greatest but I thought they turned out pretty good. I bought the material a couple years ago and I'm just getting around to using it. I enjoyed making them so much... I think I'm going out to buy more material today! =)

We walked down to the farm yesterday and stopped at one of our fields to run around and take pictures. It's quite a workout pushing the girls in the double jogging stroller and Ben in the front carrier. (the greatest invention ever!)

At The Park

We had a blast at the park yesterday! It was a lot of fun watching the girls run around trying out all of the playground equipment. We were pretty much the only ones there- that was nice. =) I couldn't get Becca to go down any slides... we'll have to keep working on her- I know she would love it! We went over to the pond and the girls gathered pinecones and threw them into the water. Anna also took a few of them home to add to her "treasure".

Anna didn't really want to go down the big curly slide. I asked her to go down once-just for me... after that first time she didn't want to do anything else!

What a blessing my three children are to me! They give me so much joy! Sure, they are lots of work most of the time, but they are lots of fun too! =D

Chatting with Grandma

Anna got in some Grandma time this afternoon. She is soo excited about the possibility of her going to Indianapolis to visit Grandma and Grandpa Nelson! Anna loves to talk on the phone and can actually carry on a half-way decent conversation! =)

Poor baby is sick today... he has a fever and is drooling like crazy! That can only mean one thing- teeth! He's actually been sleeping alot today... making up for last night. =(

Ben likes to chew on his pacifier... it feels good!

Fun Friday

It's maple syrup season again. =) We cleaned up sap buckets and tapped our trees today. We aren't actually making the syrup this year... our neighbor is doing all the work this time. Josh thought if we tapped our trees for him we might get some syrup. Our neighbor called it a deal! (It helps that we are good friends with him) The girls and I followed Josh around the yard, and as he drilled the holes we put the buckets and lids on. I really like making maple syrup...it's a fun process! (can get looong and tiring too) I remember the first time (the only time) I tried making sryup on my stove... it turned out more like maple candy. =)

I love my big girl's big, brown eyes!

As for this little girl... she's my blue eyed beauty! You kinda have to look beyond the glasses! =) And I promise I will try to get that baby boy in more pictures!

15 Days til Spring!

It's soo warm outside! To celebrate... the girls, Ben and myself all went shopping for a few hours. We went to McDonalds for lunch- the girls wanted ice cream cones but their machine was broke down. =( I was kinda bummed too. I told them that on the way home I would stop at Dairy Queen- if they were open. They were open but both the girls were asleep. So, the girls didn't get any ice cream today beacuse I didn't wake them up. =)

Some Outdoor Fun!

I let the girls go outside today, even though it was super-duper cold... that nice sunshine sure does fool you! I got a few nice pictures even though we were freezing!

Memorization...

I have been working on memorizing scripture verses... lately I've felt that I should maybe do more of that. Today I memorized Psalm 86:11 & 12 - now I am working on Psalm 91 (A chapter that I fell in love with after reading it today)

A dear friend of ours gave us clothing on Thursday. This rain jacket was among the pretty dresses! The girls really like it and take turns wearing it!

New Shoes and Cupcakes...

The girls and I made cupcakes today...Becca keeps singing "happy birthday" to everyone. I have alot of fun decorating cakes and such. Maybe someday I will open up my own

bakery/coffee shop and do custom cakes as well. =)

I bought the girls new sneakers the other day and they just LOVE them! I think they are really cute - I like the Mary Jane style. I also like that they can put them on by themselves, which is a major plus! I wanted to find them something pink and very girly... I think these fit "girly" quite well!

He's a Growing Boy!

Ben is 7 months old... one of his new tricks is reaching and grabbing everything...toys, food, mommy's bowl of soup - you name it and he's got it! (or trying to get it)

He likes to play on the floor alot more now. The girls make sure he has plenty of toys to play with! Becca smothers him in kisses every moment she gets - not so much to Ben's liking. =)

A few days ago the girls went outside for some fresh air. It was a little chilly so they didn't stay out for long. I can't wait for spring... then they can come and go as they please... and in their bare feet too!

Yes, I did! And it was kinda fun... although it really dries your hands out! I discovered I actually have a little creativity. ;) At first, we tried to make beads for a necklace... that didn't go so well. I think maybe we'll try clay next time. =)

Happy Birthday...

...to the dearest husband in the whole world! I love you! I had a 30th birthday party for Josh over at the shop. Lots of family and friends were there. My family drove 7 hours just to come for the party! We are blessed to have so many friendships!
